Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team ended the 2016-17 season with a 64-60 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division victory over the Lane College Dragons at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Thursday night.
Â
The Dragons (16-10, 13-4 SIAC West) held a 29-26 edge at halftime, but SHC would grab a 30-29 lead at the 17:39 mark in the 2
nd half when junior
Walter Massey connected with a jumper. Lane fought back to build a 45-37 bulge with 11:17 left on the clock, but the Badgers began to whittle away at the deficit to trail by just 1 point at 49-48 after a
Jack Morrissey 3-pointer at 7:43. A foul by Lane on the play under the basket also put senior
Christopher Hamilton at the line who drained 1-of-2 free throws to hand the lead back to the Badgers.
Â
Lane put the pieces together to retake a 58-51 lead by the 5:30 mark, but once again SHC found the answers with a layup followed by a free throw from freshman
William Loyd to put the Badgers back on top 60-58 with just one minute remaining. With Spring Hill leading 61-60 and 13 seconds showing, freshman
Gresyn Rogers made both ends of a two-shot trip to the free throw line. Lane's final 3-point shot from the right side at 6 seconds found nothing but the side of the backboard as Morrissey sank a game-icing free throw with less than two seconds left to close out the victory.
Â
Massey finished with game-high 31 points and 14 rebounds while Loyd scored 16 points. The Badgers shot 41.7% (20-48) overall in the game and 7.1% (1-14) from 3-point distance, but lost the rebounding war 43-36 under the boards and suffered 17 turnovers to 10 steals by Lane.
Â
Lane shot 36.9% (24-65) from the field and 12.5% (2-16) from 3-point range while fumbling away 16 turnovers to five steals by the Badgers. Devontay Clark scored 16 points and Terrance Bridgeman added 14 points for the visitors from Jackson, Tenn.
Â
The Badgers finished the season at 10-18 overall and 9-8 in SIAC West while Lane waits to discover their opponent in the opening round of the SIAC Championship Tournament.
