MEN FALL, WOMEN EXCEL IN SEASON OPENERS

Saturday was action packed for SHC Rugby as the men traveled to City Park in New Orleans to face the University of North Texas while the women hosted the LSU Tigers.

The Badgers were slow out of the gates and were not exactly where they wanted to be going into halftime. Freshman team leader Alec Savoy says, "We fought hard but we just got a slow start getting our lines and communication down, but once we got everything flowing in our style of play, we were hitting gaps very well." Even though that may not have been enough to secure the win, the men's side took a lot of experience away from the game and pinpointed some things to work on in the coming weeks.

One encouraging takeaway was the healthy return of Senior 8-man Jacob Campos, who was making his first appearance back after being injured for the fall season. In an Interview after the game, Campos noted on a lot of things the Men's team did well, "The matchup against UNT was nothing but a physical game; I think we accomplished our goal of being able to set up our attack structure, win most of our set pieces, and improve our defensive line structure." Not only did the Badger's improve in the game against UNT, they created a lot of confidence that the team, composed of mostly freshmen and sophomores, can compete with larger, Division 1 programs. As Campos puts it, "We are hoping to end this 15's season with a bang, before going into sevens."

Back in Mobile, the Lady Badgers found nothing but success in their match against LSU. The women played a very back and forth match with teams trading off scores throughout the game, but they did not let injuries and fatigue stop them from winning the battle. With a try late in the second half from Junior center Shakara Austin, the Lady Badgers were able to win their first conference game of the season. As captain Nicole Littleton said, "I have never been more proud to play for Spring Hill, I could not have asked more of our team, and I am so happy and thankful they let me lead them today." Amongst the Lady Badgers, captain Nicole Littleton had a stand out game along with Junior Eryn Swarn  and Sophomore Caroline Cusick.

Training continues as both teams prepare to face the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa on February 4th.
