Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. –The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team suffered a 65-54 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road loss to the Lane College Lady Dragons at J.F. Lane Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Dragons (7-12, 6-4 SIAC West) took a 14-11 lead over the Badgers with 1:52 left in the 1
st quarter, but Spring Hill rallied to tie the game at 18-18 midway through the 2
nd quarter. Lane reestablished a 26-19 lead behind the 3-point shooting of freshman guard Destiny Irvin who drained two consecutive long balls five minutes before halftime. Badger senior center
Leah Washington then completed a hoop-and-the-harm 3-point play only to see Irvin negate the effort with another 3-point bucket on the other end. A fourth 3-pointer by Irvin with 20 seconds left in the half sent the teams to the locker rooms with a 35-26 lead.
Lane remained hot to open the 3
rd quarter and expanded the lead to 42-29 just two minutes into the half. Another Washington 3-point play for SHC made it a 47-37 Lane lead with less than four minutes to go in the period, but the Lady Dragons maintained a 51-39 advantage with 40 seconds remaining. At the game's final media timeout with 4:58 on the clock, Lane held a 57-47 cushion, but
Alishia DraytonLewis of SHC cut it to 57-49 with a jumper at 4:40, but the Badgers would get no closer.
Freshman guard
Elise Reilly scored 13 points, Drayton-Lewis dropped in 12 points,
Jewel Hill added 11 points and Washington put 10 points on the board. The Badgers shot 36.2% (17-47) from the field including 28.6% (4-14) from 3-point distance, but hurt themselves with 20 personal fouls and 15 turnovers against four steals by Lane.
Lane shot 42.1% (24-57) overall and scorched the nets for 77.8% (7-9) from 3-point range. The Lady Dragons lost 11 turnovers to seven steals by the Badgers while also earning a 38-31 edge in rebounding. Irvin led all scorers with 15 points with a 4-for-4 showing in 3-point attempts. Tashara Jones added 13 points with 11 rebounds.
Spring Hill (10-8, 5-4 SIAC West) returns home on Monday for an SIAC West Division contest versus the LeMoyne-Owen College Lady Magicians (3-17, 3-6 SIAC West) at 5:30 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
