Box Score Freshman
Gresyn Rogers exploded for his team's individual season-high of 31 points as the Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team pulled out a 69-62 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) victory over the visiting Morehouse College Maroon Tigers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Spring Hill held a slim 32-29 lead over the Maroon Tigers (9-6, 3-4 SIAC East) at halftime, but bounced out of the locker rooms to build a 6-point advantage off a Rogers hoop-and-the-harm 3-point play just a minute into the period.
Â
It was then Morehouse's turn to go on a run as the Maroon Tigers took a 50-42 lead with 11:56 on the clock. SHC refused to surrender and raced back to tie the game at 59-59 off an inside move by Rogers that resulted in a layup with two minutes to play. Rogers would again tie the game at 62-62 just seconds later after answering an MC 3-pointer with one of his own on the other end. Fellow freshman
William Loyd then put the Badgers ahead 65-62 with another 3-point play off a layup and free throw at 1:02 remaining.
Â
Loyd would come down with an important rebound of a Morehouse 3-point attempt at 30 seconds left and Rogers converted a layup on the other end of the floor to make it a 67-62 Spring Hill cushion. MC would miss a layup resulting a rebound by junior
Walter Massey who found Rogers open again for his final points of the night with just nine seconds showing. Sophomore
Chase Shellman closed out the proceedings with a half-court steal of the in-bounds pass as SHC dribbled out the final seconds.
Â
Rogers added four rebounds and a steal to go with his 31 points and 11-of-15 (.733) shooting effort while Massey dropped in 10 points for the home team. SHC shot a healthy 53.2% (25-47) from the field and 47.1% (8-17) from 3-point distance while hurting themselves with 23 turnovers to 14 steals by Morehouse. The Badgers also owned the boards collecting a 41-19 margin in rebounding.
Â
Morehouse shot 35.8% (19-53) from the floor and 41.7% (10-24) from 3-point range while suffering nine turnovers to just two Badger steals. Tyrius Walker poured in 23 points for the visitors from Atlanta, Ga.
Â
The Badgers (4-15, 3-5 SIAC West) now hit the road for a two-game conference swing beginning on Thursday in Fairfield, Ala., at the Miles College Golden Bears (0-13, 0-4 SIAC West) at 7:30 p.m. in Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
