Softball finishes 2016 with sweep of Stillman
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team closed out the 2016 season with a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader sweep of the Stillman College (SC) Lady Tigers on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 10-0 and 5-4 at Murray Field.

Senior starter Caroline Sagrera (23-8) pitched two complete games in her final appearance in purple and registered 14 strike outs on the day to run her final career total to 1,531. She also allowed six hits and six walks over her final 12 innings of work. With the victories Sagrera closes her collegiate career with an overall record of 126 wins, 36 losses and two saves.

Spring Hill won the first game in five innings after blowing open a scoreless tie after 3½ innings of play by notching 10 runs off 10 hits in the bottom of the 4th frame.

The second game found the Badgers and Tigers tied at 1-1 after the 1st inning when SHC grabbed a 3-1 advantage in a 3rd inning that was highlighted by a run-scoring double by designated player Randi DeArmitt with one out. Stillman answered with a solo home run to right field by left fielder Brooke Hagood in the next half inning, but Spring Hill would expand its lead to 5-2 with two runs in the bottom of the 4th frame when centerfielder Jenna Charnock connected on an RBI-triple and was later brought home by a bunt-single from catcher Kali Clement.

The two extra runs for the Badgers in the 4th inning proved invaluable in the top of the 7th inning when Stillman loaded the bases with no outs. Tiger shortstop Sami Story cashed in on her opportunity with a two-run single to left-center to slice it down to a 5-4 Badger bulge, but Sagrera escaped the jam with a strike out and a 3rd-to-1st double play by third baseman Rene Kausin that featured a rocket across the diamond to first baseman Madeline Burchell to end the game.

On offense, eight of the nine Badger starters enjoyed multiple-hit days as Charnock had three hits with three RBI, Burchell and DeArmitt both had three hits with two RBI, right fielder Katelyn Wilson registered three hits with a run-driven-in, and senior second baseman Lauren Stewart punched three hits in the second game. Clement slapped two hits for three RBI, Kausin collected two hits with two RBI and senior left fielder Taylor Lahasky tallied a pair hits with an RBI.

For the Lady Tigers (18-23, 14-10 SIAC), Haleigh Junkin (7-9) took the loss in the opener allowing eight hits in 3.2 innings of work with a walk and no strike outs. MicKenzie Sparks (8-11) went the distance in the nightcap with 11 hits, two walks and five strike outs.

Spring Hill finished the 2016 season with a 37-14 overall mark and a 24-0 record in SIAC play, marking the second consecutive season the Badgers have been undefeated in conference play.
