Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Barry University Buccaneers at Murray Field on Wednesday afternoon by rallying in the 7th inning to win 2-1 in the opener and falling 5-2 in a darkness shortened second game.
Barry (10-8) held a 1-0 lead going into the final inning of the first contest, but the Bucs would surrender a run with one out when a single to right field by SHC centerfielder
Jenna Charnock was compounded by a wild throw back into the infield that scored left fielder
Taylor Lahasky from third base and moved Charnock all the way to the third sack. Catcher
Kali Clement provided the game-ending heroics with a perfect bunt-single down the third base line to bring in Charnock.
Badger starter
Caroline Sagrera moved to 9-7 on the year with a complete-game seven-hitter that included a walk and four strike outs. Geneva Santos (7-2) of Barry took the loss with seven hits allowed three walks and a strike out.
The second game saw the Bucs tally four runs in the 4th inning to build a 5-0 lead off SHC starter
Danielle Clark (4-4). The Badgers responded with two runs in the 5th frame, but the building twilight led to the decision to end the game after six innings of play. Anieliese Palmeiro (3-2) earned the victory with nine hits, three walks and no strike outs while Clark took the loss with six hits, two walks and no strike outs in 3.1 innings. Sagrera finished the game for SHC with 2.1 innings of work, two hits, no walks and two strike outs.
At the plate, Clement had four hits with a double and two RBI while Charnock and shortstop
Carmen Byrd each had three hits for the home team. Barry's Megan Copeland had five hits and an RBI on the day as Kayla Ogle, Dee Espinoza, Sam Busekrus and Alayna Gallagher each collected a pair of safeties for the Bucs.
Spring Hill (14-10, 3-0 SIAC) will next host the Lane College Lady Dragons (4-3, 0-3 SIAC) in a conference doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday at Murray Field.
