Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at the William Carey University Lady Crusaders on Tuesday afternoon by falling 1-0 in the opener, but rebounding to win the night cap 2-1.
In the first game, Badger starter
Caroline Sagrera (4-6) held the Lady Crusaders (5-5) scoreless through six-and-a-third innings when two errors and an infield single loaded the bases for Carey. Sagrera then surrendered the unearned winning run by hitting William Carey's right field Harli Crow on a 1-1 count.
Rachel Hickman (3-2) of WCU earned the complete-game shutout allowing five hits with three walks and four strike outs while Sagrera took the hard-luck loss with four hits, two walks and six strike outs.
Badger shortstop
Carmen Byrd had two hits in the first game while Carey centerfielder Cecilia Lawn enjoyed a 3-for-4 game.
The Badgers turned the tables in the second game by taking a 7th inning victory behind the pitching of freshman
Danielle Clark (3-3) who scattered four hits with five walks and five strike outs. Hannah Moak (2-3) took the loss allowing seven hits with two walks and eight strike outs.
SHC broke open a 1-1 tie in the 7th frame as catcher
Kali Clement led off with a double to right center and moved to 3rd on a bunt single by third baseman
Rene Kausin. Clement then scored on a wild pitch by Moak and Clark sat the Lady Crusaders down in order to end the game.
Clement had two hits in the game while first baseman
Madeline Burchell added three hits to the Badger box score.
Spring Hill (8-9) will next visit Gulf Shores on Friday to begin play in the Gulf Coast Invitational versus the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (10-5) at 3 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
