Box Score WILBERFORCE, Ohio. – A layup by junior center
Leah Washington with one-tenth of a second left on the clock gave the Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team a 62-60 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division victory over the Central State University (CSU) Lady Marauders at Beacom/Lewis Gym on Thursday evening.
The Lady Marauders (8-11, 4-8 SIAC West) held a 33-30 lead at the intermission and 44-42 at the end of the 3rd period, but Spring Hill responded with a bucket by Washington at 4:15 to take a 54-52 lead. From there, the teams traded buckets and found the score tied at 60-60 with 45 seconds left.
Washington came up with a crucial defensive rebound at 16 seconds. The Badgers saw a blocked shot by the Lady Marauders go out of bounds to Spring Hill with 10 seconds remaining and off the inbounds play sophomore guard
Jennifer Clark missed a layup, but Washington followed the shot with the rebound and the layup to beat the buzzer and give SHC the win.
During the game, senior guard
Natalie Harper also drained two 3-point buckets to give her a new Spring Hill women's basketball record for career made 3-point shots with 150 surpassing the 149 treys made by Cathy Coxe from 1989 to 1993.
"Central State is a very talented team," said SHC head coach Karen McCoinco following the game. "Our post play was phenomenal tonight and we just fought hard as a team."
Junior Badger forward
Camry Johnson led all scorers with 23 points while Washington notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. SHC won the rebounding battle in a 44-42 outcome, but lost 22 turnovers to nine CSU steals. From the field, the Badgers were 39.1% (25-64) including 23.1% (3-13) from 3-point range.
For CSU, Kourtni Perry came off the bench to score 17 points and Sierra Harley added 12 points. The Lady Marauders shot 36.7% (22-60) from the floor and were 30% (3-10) from long distance. The home team lost 21 turnovers to nine Badger steals.
The Badgers (8-13, 6-6 SIAC West) will continue this road swing in Frankfurt, Ky., on Saturday afternoon with an SIAC match at the West Division-leading Kentucky State University Thorobrettes (14-3, 9-2 SIAC West) at 3 p.m. in the Exum Center.
