Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team led the game for only the final four-tenths of a second, but that was enough to earn a 65-64 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) victory over the Kentucky State University (KSU) Thorobreds on Saturday evening at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center as sophomore
Walter Massey's put-back tip-in of a missed layup with under a second to play was the game-winner.
The Thorobreds (11-13, 9-9 SIAC West) jumped out to a 13-0 lead and the Badgers failed to score for the first eight minutes, but Spring Hill rallied in the second half to slice the KSU advantage down to 60-59 with 3½ minutes left on the clock.
Freshman guard
Sawyer Glick kept the Badgers within one point off a layup with 38 seconds remaining. Then with 13 seconds left, the Thorobreds called a timeout, but fumbled the in-bounds play to give the Badgers the ball back and a final chance for the win. Senior guard
Jarrett Calhoun drove the lane for what appeared to the game's final shot, but the ball rolled off the rim setting up Massey's put-back winner.
A last ditch full-court pass by KSU was slapped out of bounds on the far end as the horn sounded.
Calhoun led all scorers with 17 points and Massey added 13 points with 11 rebounds for the Badgers. SHC shot 40.6% (26-64) for the night including 30.8% (4-13) from 3-point distance. Spring Hill limited its turnovers to 10 against just four steals by KSU.
The Thorobreds' Kevin Shaw scored 16 points as Johntea Alexander pitched in 12 points and Malcolm Smith put 11 points on the scoreboard. Julius Barton pulled down 13 rebounds as KSU out-rebounded SHC 39-29. Kentucky State shot 52.7% (29-55) overall and 35.3% (6-17) from three-point range, but lost 18 turnovers to six Badger steals that became 26 points for the home team.
The Badgers (8-18) finished the SIAC portion of their schedule with a 7-11 mark and will next visit the University of Mobile Rams (14-13) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. for a non-conference tilt in Pharr Gymnasium.
