Men's hoops stops skid with 74-64 win over UMobile Rams
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team snapped their season-opening losing skid with a 74-64 non-conference road victory over the University of Mobile (UM) Rams on Saturday night at H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.

Both teams stumbled out of the starting blocks as missed shots and turnovers resulted in a scoreless tie three minutes into play. SHC finally broke the drought with a layup by Brandon Fischer and an alert put-back basket of a missed free from by Walter Massey. Later, a backdoor play by Jared Holland made it a 6-0 Badger lead at the 15:30 mark.

UM got on the board at 14:40, but a 3-point basket by Raphael Jones of SHC made it a 9-4 Badger advantage with 13:18 left in the half. Consecutive 3-pointers by UM at the 11- and 10-minute marks put Mobile up 12-9 and by the 8:09 mark the Rams held a 16-10 cushion. SHC bounced back with back-to-back treys by Jack Morrissey to tie the game at 16-16 at 5:30 and another alert hoop-and-the-harm put-back basket made it a 19-16 margin for the visitors.

With 18.7 second left before intermission the Badgers built a 28-21 advantage off another hoop-and-the-harm 3-point play by Deandre Lacy and carried that advantage into halftime.

The defensive battle continued in the second half, but SHC would let Mobile get no closer than six points at 38-32 with 13 minutes remaining and held as much as a 15-point bulge with three minutes left at 65-50.

Spring Hill shot 50% (26-52) overall and was 46.7% (7-15) from 3-point land while also winning the rebounding war 49-41 under the boards. The Badgers lost 19 turnovers to seven Mobile steals, but took away 13 turnovers with five steals of their own. The balanced attack by the Badgers produced four double digit scorers as Holland and Jones both had 12 points and Gresyn Rogers and William Loyd added 11 points each.

The Rams (5-4) had three players score 11 points as Mobile shot 33.8% (23-68) from the field and 28.6% (8-28) from 3-point distance. Both teams struggled at the free throw line as SHC made just 46.9% (15-34) of their charity shots and Mobile sank 50% (10-20).

The Badgers (1-9) will host non-conference foe the Williams Baptist College Eagles (4-4) on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
