Tigers ensnare Badgers, 65-61
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team dropped a 65-61 non-conference home decision to the University of West Alabama (UWA) Tigers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Monday night.
 
The Tigers (3-1) jumped out to a 15-7 lead five minutes into the 1st half, but the Badgers rallied to take a 30-29 lead heading into halftime off a William Loyd put back bucket with one second left on the clock.
 
Junior Walter Massey of SHC hit a jumper to open the second period as the Badgers took a 32-29 lead, but UWA used a barrage of eight 3-point buckets to take and hold a 6- to 4-point margin for much of the final stanza.
 
With 20 seconds remaining, SHC hit a jumper by Massey to make it a 61-58 Tiger advantage, but Sean Cranney of UWA knocked down two free throws with 15 seconds on the clock and Toni Kumanovic would take away a midcourt steal at 9 seconds to secure the victory for the visitors from Livingston.
 
Massey led the Badger charge with 13 points while Brandon Fischer added 12 points and Raphael Jones put 10 points in the baskets. Spring Hill shot 46.3% (25-54) from the floor and 37.5% (6-16) from 3-point distance, but hit just 5-of-8 (.625) of its three throws. SHC lost 14 turnovers to four steals by the Tigers while UWA lost 15 turnovers to five Badgers steals.
 
Jake Jobling of UWA made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points as Dominique Alexander and Gavin Robinson each had 10 points for the Tigers. UWA was 49% (24-49) overall and a 47.4% (9-19) in 3-pointers including a blistering 61.5% (8-13) in the decisive 2nd half. The Tigers out-rebounded SHC 28-26 under the baskets and drained 8-of-9 (.889) free throws.
 
The Badgers (0-8) will remain at home in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts (4-0) in a non-conference rematch of a game from last week when UWF took a 74-56 victory in Pensacola.
