Badgers nipped by UMobile in home opener, 56-55
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team opened its home schedule with a 56-55 non-conference loss versus the University of Mobile Rams on Monday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
 
The Rams (3-1) took a 26-22 lead into the locker rooms at halftime, but the Badgers battled back to take a 49-42 lead with 7:08 left in the game. Mobile whittled the score down to 49-47 at the 4:41 mark, but SHC rebuilt a 53-47 advantage a minute later and held a 55-51 lead with just under two minutes to play.
 
Mobile answered back with a layup by Dillon Pollard and a game-tying jumper by DJ Hill at 1:06 and then took the final 56-55 lead off a free throw by Brandon Barnes with three seconds left. The Badgers got a final half court heave off by Brandon Fischer, but it only caught the front iron at the horn.
 
Spring Hill was led by Shawn Moore with 11 points and Fischer with 10 points as the Badgers shot 44.4% (16-36) overall and 40% (4-10) from 3-point range. The Badgers out-rebounded the Rams 36-26, but lost 19 turnovers to seven Mobile steals. Mobile lost 13 turnovers to just three Badger steals.
 
The Rams shot 38.3% (18-47) from the field and 38.5% (5-13) from long distance as Hill dropped in 14 points with Rashad Strother and Darius Curry each adding 12 points off the bench.
 
The Badgers (0-3) will next host Jesuit rival the Loyola University (La.) Wolf Pack (2-2) on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
