Cross Country wraps up 2016 season in South Carolina
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men and women's cross country teams finished their 2016 seasons at the 2016 ASICS Sand Shark Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) at Sgt. Jasper Park on Saturday morning. The men's team finished 14th of 23 competing teams while the ladies ran 9th of 27 teams.
 
As a team, the Badger men ran the 8,000-meter event in a combined time of 144:13.36 for 389 points to place 315 points behind champion SCAD Savannah Bees that ran a time of 128:46.30 for 74 points.
 
Freshman Spencer Albright of Covington, La., continued to rewrite the Badger men's record book by breaking his own Spring Hill College men's 8-kilometer record with a time of 26:06.63 to finish 19th among the 216 competing runners, trailing the individual champion Sam Beal of The Cumberlands who ran a winning time of 24:33.98.
 
Fellow freshman David Toups of Baton Rouge, La., also put his name in the SHC archives with a 24th placed time of 26:19.77 that qualified as the 3rd best SHC time in history. Freshmen Joe Butler of Kirkwood, Mo., was 97th place with a time of 28:00.67 and freshman Julian Sparks from Round Rock, Texas placed 161st in a time of 30:46.06. Freshman Cade Dernlan of St. Louis, Mo., came in with a time of 33:00.23 to close the Badger scoring while junior Kent Cheramie crossed the line in 212th place with a mark of 39:12.86.
 
For the women's team, Spring Hill came in with a combined time of 100:08.32 over 5,000 meters for 292 points to finish behind Milligan College who tallied 70 points in a time of 92:10.42.
 
Junior Nicole Kotval of Baton Rouge continued her excellent season by notching the 3rd best women's 5k time in SHC history with a time of 18:42.73 and a 77th place finish to come in behind individual champion Hannah Segrave of Milligan who ran a winning time of 17:14.33.
 
Sophomore Gabrielle Hantak of St. Louis was the next Badger across the line with a 32nd place finish out of 244 runners with an SHC 14th-best time of 19:15.83. Freshmen Kylie Purdy of Trussville, Ala., and Meghan Sullivan of Hattiesburg, Miss., placed 83rd and 98th with times of 20:28.45 and 20:45.81 respectively. Fellow freshman Amelia Hoffeld of Covington came in at 110th with a time of 20:55.50 and yet another freshman in Lauren Fischer of Marietta, Ga., posted a time of 22:43.16 for 174th place.
Other Badger runners included sophomore Kara McKinney of Fairhope, Ala., in 196th place at 23:34.50, junior Chelsea James of New Orleans, La., who scratched out a time of 24:49.33 for 211th place and junior Anastasia Walloga of Houston, Texas, who came in at 219th place in 25:36.76.
