Badgers hold off Lane Dragons, 80-78
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team won an 80-78 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) decision over the Lane College Dragons at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Thursday night.

Spring Hill led the Dragons (11-10, 7-4 SIAC West) by a 32-30 score at the half as freshman forward Chase Shellman cleaned up a missed shot with a tip-in at the buzzer.

A 14-4 run by the Badgers midway through the second half staked SHC to a 57-46 advantage with 11:04 left on the clock, but the Dragons rallied to cut the deficit to 62-60 just six minutes later. Another tip-in by Shellman was followed by a Walter Massey dunk as the Badgers reclaimed a 68-61 advantage.

At 4:26 Terrance Bridgeman drained a 3-pointer for Lane to make it a 70-66 SHC lead, but sophomore guard Jack Morrissey answered with a trey ball for the Badgers on the other end 30 seconds later. A Joseph Cooper layup brought Lane to within 73-71 at 1:51, but once again the Badgers had the answer in the form of a layup by freshman Sawyer Glick at 1:14.

Kendarious Ash of the Dragons converted a layup at 43 seconds left on the clock to whittle the Spring Hill advantage down to 76-75 only to see Massey and senior guard Jarrett Calhoun drain four consecutive free throws to keep the Badgers ahead 80-76 with 13 seconds to play. Bridgeman made it 80-78 with two free throws at 7 seconds and Calhoun failed on two Badger free throw attempts after being fouled before SHC could inbound the ball or time could expire from the clock.

Bridgeman drove the ball down the lane in an attempt to send the game to extra time, but his layup found nothing except the bottom of the backboard. The Dragons won the scramble for the loose rebound, but could not get another shot off as the final buzzer sounded.

Spring Hill was led by Calhoun with his personal season-high of 23 points, Shellman with 12 points, and Glick with 10 points. SHC squeaked out a 28-27 win in rebounding, but lost 18 turnovers to 10 steals by Lane, leading to 40 points by the Dragons off Badger turnovers. SHC shot 51% (25-49) from the field and was 33.3% (6-18) in 3-point attempts while making 70.6% (24-34) of their free throws.

Lane shot 52.9% (27-51) from the floor and made 50% (10-20) of their 3-point tries while converting 70% (14-20) of their trips to the charity stripe. James Caldwell scored 17 points while Bridgeman and Ash each had 14 points. Lane lost 20 turnovers to seven Badger steals.

The Badgers (6-13, 5-6 SIAC West) begin a two-week, four-game road trip on Monday when they visit the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians (9-10, 6-4 SIAC West) for a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division matchup at 7:30 p.m. at Bruce/Johnson Hall in Memphis, Tenn.
