No. 17 Benedict bests Badger women, 72-64
Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team suffered a 72-64 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road loss to the 17th-ranked Benedict College (BC) Lady Tigers at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena on Thursday evening.
The Lady Tigers (17-1, 7-1 SIAC East) took a 9-6 lead early in the first period and continued to hold a 3-point advantage at 11-8 with 4:24 to go in the 1st quarter, but the Badgers rallied to tie the game at 17-17 heading into the 2nd period of play.
BC recaptured a 21-17 lead with the first two buckets of the 2nd period and maintained 26-23 margin midway through the stanza. By halftime, the Lady Tigers had built a 35-25 bulge over the Badgers.
Five minutes into the second half, Benedict led 45-31 in route to a 52-40 margin headed to the final 10 minutes of play. A late run by SHC made it a 61-57 deficit with less than three minutes to go, but a deep 3-pointer by BC made it 64-57 as SHC could not close the gap over the final two minutes.
Following the game, SHC head coach
Karen McConico said, "I'm proud of the way our women fought back tonight. If we had hit a few more shots, it might have been a different outcome, but we competed and I am happy about that."
Spring Hill was led by sophomore guard
Jennifer Clark with 22 points as the Badgers shot 42.9% (21-49) overall and 46.2% (6-13) from 3-point range. SHC lost 15 turnovers against seven steals by Benedict and lost the rebounding war 32-29.
The Lady Tigers were paced by Terri Jacobs with 14 points and Sarah Green came off the bench to pitch in 12 points for the home team. BC scored the nets at a 51.8% (29-56) pace and a 33.3% (6-18) rate from long distance. Benedict suffered 11 rebounds versus just two steals by the Badgers.
The Badgers (5-10, 3-3 SIAC West) will now travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to play the Claflin University Lady Panthers (10-7, 5-2 SIAC East) in a conference match at 2 p.m. (Eastern) in Tullis Arena on Saturday.
