Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at the University of West Alabama (UWA) Lady Tigers by the scores of 10-0 in five innings and 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex.
Badger junior catcher
Samantha Leach cracked a Grand Slam in the 1st inning as SHC took a 4-0 lead before the first out of the opening game was recorded by the Lady Tigers (16-19). Junior right fielder
Lauren Stewart made it a 5-0 contest in the 3rd inning with a single to left that brought in Leach from 2nd base.
Freshman 2nd baseman
Carmen Byrd then forced in Stewart for a run with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 5th inning followed by a two-run single off the bat of sophomore centerfielder
Jenna Charnock and an RBI-single by senior shortstop
Shea Blanchard.
Caroline Sagrera (25-6) went the full five innings in the "Mercy Rule" shortened game with three hits allowed, a walk and nine strikeouts while Alli Hall (9-14) gave up nine hits with seven walks and two strikeouts in the loss for UWA.
UWA pitcher Ashley Stassin helped her cause in the nightcap with a two-out, three-run home run in the 3rd inning, but Leach once again responded to the challenge in the 5th inning with a single through the right side to plate senior 3rd baseman
Emma Kittrell. Stewart brought the Badgers to within 3-2 via a lead-off homer in the 6th inning and SHC put the tying run at 3rd base with two outs later in the inning only to close out the frame with a grounder back to the pitcher.
In the top of the 7th inning, Charnock tripled to right field to open the frame forcing UWA to bring Giana Cavallaro (1-4) to the circle in relief. Cavallaro's first pitch resulted in a missed bunt attempt by Blanchard, but the ball squirted through the catcher's legs and Charnock scampered home with the tying run on a passed ball. Leach then walked and scored the go-ahead run off a double to right field by sophomore designated player
Mary Glass.
Sagrera struck out the first Tiger hitter of the 7th inning, coaxed a pop-up to shortstop, hit a batter, and ended the game with her ninth strikeout of the contest for her second complete-game victory of the day. The right-hander gave up just three hits and four walks in the second game. Stassin allowed nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts in the no-decision.
Spring Hill (34-7, 16-0 SIAC West) next travels to Memphis, Tenn., for a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series at the Lady Magicians (0-11, 0-9 SIAC) of LeMoyne-Owen College Buckhead Creek Recreation Complex beginning with a Friday doubleheader at 4 p.m. and followed by a single game on Saturday at noon.
