Badgers broom Florida Southern, 7-0 & 7-5
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader away from the Florida Southern College (FSC) Moccasins by the scores of 7-0 and 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Murray Field.

The Badgers took a 3-0 lead over the Moccasins (11-11) in the 3rd inning of the first game when senior shortstop Shea Blanchard crushed a 3-run home run out of left field. In the 4th frame, senior 3rd baseman Emma Kittrell added a run with a double to center that plated senior 1st baseman Elise deBruler who had earlier led off the inning with a double to right-centerfield.

SHC iced the game in the 6th inning when three runs scored off a 2-out triple to right-centerfield by junior catcher Samantha Leach.

Junior starter Caroline Sagrera (8-2) was the complete-game winner and missed her seventh career no-hit bid when FSC 2nd baseman Gianni Artidiello laced a seeing-eye single up the middle of the infield in the 6th inning. Sagrera struck out 10, hit a batter and walked one.

Brandi Jones fell to 7-4 on the year in five innings of work with 10 hits allowed, a walk and two strikeouts.

The second game saw the Badgers fall behind 4-0 after leading off the 1st inning with consecutive infield errors that scored two unearned runs for the Moccasins and Sagrera was touched for three singles in the 2nd frame that scored two more runs for the visitors from Lakeland, Fla.

SHC would not give up that easily, however, and scored two runs in the 3rd inning off an RBI-triple by freshman 2nd baseman Carmen Byrd who later scored off a wild pitch. The Badgers cut it to a one-run deficit in the 4th inning when a bobbled infield grounder with two outs brought in freshman right fielder Randi DeArmitt.

FSC scratched out a run off a wild pitch by Badger freshman reliever Kimberly Small in the 5th inning, but Spring Hill erupted for four runs off five hits in the bottom of the 5th inning with DeArmitt tying the game on a RBI-single to left-center and deBruler putting the Badgers ahead to stay with a double to deep right-center that scored pinch runner Rene Kausin.

Small (2-1) earned the win in 5.0 innings of relief while allowing five hits and two walks. Hannah Loyer (2-4) took the loss in 4.1 innings and gave up nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Badgers pounded out 24 hits on the day led by Leach's four hits with three RBIs and left fielder Jenna Charnock's four hits and two stolen bases. Byrd, DeArmitt, deBruler and designed player Mary Glass each added three hits to the SHC numbers.

Artidiello, Loyer and 1st baseman Priscilla Gonzalez each had two hits for the Moccasins.

Spring Hill (10-3) next visits Gulf Shores, Ala., to play in the Gulf Coast Invitational beginning on Friday versus the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College (8-1) at 1 p.m.
