Eleven college rugby teams visited The Hill to compete in the fast-paced, Olympic version of the game: Rugby Sevens. With seven players per side on the field and only seven minutes per half, games were packed with hard, bone-crunching tackles and high speed breakaway highlights.
The Lady Badgers faced off in round robin play against West Florida and Tulane. The home team started the day with an impressive 30-5 victory over UWF. In game two, the team met a speedy Tulane team that found a lot of space on the outside where SHC was no match and was handed their first loss of the day by a score of 0-29. The ladies fought back to their winning ways in game 3 against UWF and earned a 17-10 victory. That left the championship to be decided in the final matchup between SHC and Tulane. The lower score definitely reflected both teams' fatigue from the day, but Tulane's extra substitutes provided enough boost to overcome SHC by a score of 17-5 and take home the SHC 7's Women's Division Championship.
It was a very similar experience for the mens' team having some up and down performances with a limited number of players.
The first game of the day would be recorded as a SHC victory due to West Florida using ineligible players, but on the field, UWF's experience certainly exposed some trouble areas for the Badgers. Next up was Southern Illinois, who made the long journey during their spring break. After a very physical first half, the visitors from the north used some speedy substitutes in the second half and pulled away with a 28-7 victory over SHC. The final pool game against Tulane determined which team advanced in the Cup or Plate semifinals. During the final minute of the game, with the Badgers down by 3 points, Sophomore
Will Ward would scoop up a loose ball and find a seam up the middle of the field to touch down the game winning 5-pointer and give SHC the 12-10 victory.
Losing Sophomore
Jacob Campos due to injury in the previous match would leave the Badgers with only 1 substitute against Louisiana-Lafayette in game one of the knock out round. Feeling the effects from previous matches, both teams played a slower, more selective attacking game. In the end, ULL's extra reserves were too much; giving the Rajun Cajun's a 12-5 victory over the home team and advancing them into the Cup Championship match.
With the Lady Badgers' spring season now complete, the team will look forward to the alumni weekend celebration and final preparations before summer break.
The mens' team still have two more opportunities in the conference sevens tournaments on April 11
th (@ Troy) and April 25
th (@ LA-Tech) to improve upon this weekend's performance.
