Softball splits with West Alabama in NCAA Division II debut
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team opened the program's NCAA Division II era with a non-conference doubleheader split versus the Tigers of the University of West Alabama (UWA) at Murray Field on Sunday afternoon after dropping the opener 1-0 but rebounding to win the nightcap 2-1.

Spring Hill out hit the Tigers 5-3 and junior starter Caroline Sagrera struck out 11 batters in the first contest of the day, but UWA would take the victory with a 2-out RBI-double to deep centerfield by Tiger designated player Treasure Rodriguez in the 6th inning. SHC put the tying run at 2nd base with one out in the 7th inning by a line drive to center and a grounder back to the pitcher would close out the threat.

Ashley Stassin earned the complete-game victory with five hits allowed, three walks and one strikeout.

In the second game, Sagrera (1-1) again took the rubber and threw a no hitter through 6.1 innings as a single up the middle by Rodriguez broke up the no-no bid.

SHC broke out 2-0 in the 1st inning when senior shortstop Shea Blanchard drove a run-scoring triple down the right field line and was brought in one batter later off a single to left by sophomore designated player Mary Glass. UWA would crack the scoreboard with an unearned run in the 5th frame via a sacrifice fly to left by UWA (3-3) shortstop Mariah Chavez that plated Stassin. A 7th inning infield error would place the Tiger tying run at 3rd base with two outs, but Sagrera shut the door on the first SHC NCAA Division II victory by coaxing a groundball to 1st base for the final out.

Alli Hall took the loss for UWA allowing three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Sagrera struck out 16 batters on the day and allowed four hits with three walks.

At the plate, Blanchard enjoyed a 3-for-5 day while Glass picked up two singles in six at-bats for Spring Hill.

Spring Hill (1-1) travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Tuesday to face long-time NAIA rival the William Carey University Lady Crusaders in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
