Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team won a 65-59 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division decision over the LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) Lady Magicians on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The Lady Magicians (16-8, 12-5 SIAC West) got off to a fast start by building a 6-0 lead in the first four minutes before SHC rallied to take a 17-16 lead off a layup by sophomore center
Leah Washington at 7:16 to go in the period.
Badger shooting built out a 7-point lead with 4:02 to go until halftime and Spring Hill would carry a 35-29 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Up by 12 points 56-44 with 10:22 to play, it appeared the Badgers would coast to an easy victory, but the Lady Magicians has other plans and fought back to within two points at 56-54 with five minutes left on the clock. Hitting 9-of-10 free throws by the Badgers over the next 4½ minutes would give the home the victory despite not making a field goal over the final 10 minutes of play.
Washington would pace the Badgers with 13 points and nine rebounds while senior forward
Twarner Witherspoon would add 11 points off the bench and fellow senior guard
Elissa VandeWaa dropped in 10 points. SHC shot 51.1% (24-47) from the floor including 46.7% (7-15) from 3-point range and out-rebounded LeMoyne-Owen by a 33-27 margin. Turnovers remained a problem, however, as Spring Hill lost 18 fumbles to nine steals by the opposition.
Tenesha Wright led LOC with 26 points and Latrice Sears added 11 points as the Lady Magicians shot 39.6% (21-53) overall and just 14.3% (2-14) from long distance. LOC lost 11 turnovers to four Badger steals.
The Badgers (13-12, 10-7 SIAC West) will wrap up the 2014-2015 season with a home game versus the Lane College Lady Dragons (5-18, 5-12 SIAC West) on Monday beginning at 6 p.m. in the Arthur R.
