LAFAYETTE, La. – After a two-week holiday layoff, the Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team lost a 74-54 exhibition decision at NCAA Division 1 opponent the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) Ragin' Cajuns in the Cajundome on Wednesday night.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-6) jumped out to an 8-0 lead before sophomore
Walter Massey answered with a 2-point bucket at 17:41 of the first half. A second basket by Massey at 14:48 made it a 16-4 margin in favor of the home team and his third bucket of the night also drew a foul as the score stood at 22-7 with 13:12 left in the half.
ULL was successful on its first six shots and was 8-of-11 from the field in the first 8 minutes of play as Massey put his eighth point of the night in the hoop at 10:58, but the Cajuns answered back with two buckets on the other end to grow the lead to 27-8 at the 9:32 mark.
Senior
Jackson Fos put the first points on the board for SHC by someone other than Massey with a 3-pointer at 8:17 to make it a 27-11 Badger deficit only to have ULL answer with a layup just 34 seconds later.
Starting the second period of play, ULL maintained a 38-21 advantage and the teams would trade layups in the first 21 seconds of the half before the Cajuns' Haywood Register knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to build out a 46-23 lead. The Cajun lead would balloon to as much as 33 points at 61-28 with 11:59 remaining.
Spring Hill was led by Massey's 21 points off a 7-for-8 (.875) individual shooting performance. The Badgers shot 35.2% (19-54) from the field overall and 31.3% (5-16) from 3-point range while hauling down 34 total rebounds and suffering 16 turnovers against six steals by the Cajuns.
For ULL, Register put 22 points in the goals to pace the Cajuns while Steven Wronkoski scored 12 points with seven of the team's 34 total rebounds. The home standing Cajuns shot 45.1% (23-51) from the floor including 34.5% (10-29) from behind the 3-point line and lost 13 turnovers to four SHC steals.
The Badgers (1-8, 0-2 SIAC West) next travel to Augusta, Ga., on Monday for a conference tilt with the Paine College Lions (3-9, 1-2 SIAC East) at the HEAL Complex beginning at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern)
