Badgers can't hold on as Argos rally for 78-73 win
Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team saw the  University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts rally in the final two minutes to take a 78-73 non-conference decision away from the Badgers at the UWF Field House on Monday night.

The Argos (1-2) looked to work the inside paint in the early going while SHC preferred the outside shot, leading to a 6-4 UWF advantage and the Badgers picking up five fast fouls by the 16-minute mark.

Consecutive 3-point buckets by the Badgers staked the visitors to a 12-9 lead at 13:40, but UWF cut the SHC lead to 19-18 with a fast break layup of their own at 7:50 and re-took the lead at 24-23 off a free throw line jumper at 6:20. Redshirt freshman Sawyer Glick deposited two more 3-pointers to put the Badgers back up 33-28, but UWF refused to go away, answering with a jumper and a thunder dunk put-back of a missed trey to pull back within 33-32 with 40 seconds remaining.

Spring Hill came out of the halftime holding a 36-33 lead and had built a 46-38 advantage by the 15-minute mark when senior guard Jarrett Calhoun connected on a layup that sent him sprawling and Glick followed it with a fast break bucket off a half-court steal.

With SHC ahead 50-43, Mario Stramaglia of UWF converted all three attempts of a 3-shot free throw effort to make it a 4-point Badger lead at 50-46 with 12 minutes remaining At 3:46 left, SHC continued to hold a 4-point bulge at 67-63 when guard Jared Holland made a 4-point play off 3-pointer from the left side followed by the foul to make it 71-65.

UWF once again cut it to a 3-point game at 71-68 with a free throw at 2:08 and tied it at 71-71 with 1:36 to go off a 3-pointer from the left corner by Stramaglia. Stramaglia then gave the Argos a 74-71 lead with a trey from top of the key with 50 seconds left on the clock.

Calhoun answered with a layup in traffic and Rashaan Benson of UWF made two free throws with 15 seconds make it 76-73 when the Badgers called a timeout with 12.5 seconds showing. A three attempt by Morrissey did not fall with six seconds showing and two free throws on the other end gave the Argos 78-73 victory.

Glick scored a game-high 22 points for SHC as the Badgers shot 46.6% (27-58) from the floor and 47.4% (9-19) from 3-point distance, but converted on just 55.6% (10-18) from the charity stripe. The Badger fumbled the ball away 14 times in the face of just four UWF steals while benefitting from 14 Argo turnovers against eight SHC steals.

Lendward Griffin paced the Argos with 17 points as four UWF players reached double-digit scoring. West Florida out-rebounded Spring Hill 40-31 while shooting 44.0% (22-50) from the field and 54.5% (6-11) from 3-point land.

The Badgers (1-4) will travel the northwest direction on the compass on Saturday when they visit Hattiesburg, Miss., for a non-conference match with long-time rivals the William Carey University (WCU) Crusaders (2-3) in Clinton Gymnasium for a 4 p.m. tip off. Since 2001, Carey holds a 19-10 advantage in the series, but the Badgers earned a 60-55 victory at home in 2014.
