Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team lost a heartbreaking 68-67 non-conference home game in overtime to the University of West Alabama (UWA) Lady Tigers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Friday night. The outcome marked the second time in less than a week that (UWA) found a way to slip by SHC in the final seconds.
The Lady Tigers (2-0) slipped off the hook against the Badgers in Livingston on Sunday as a layup with 4.1 seconds left provided the difference and on Friday a jumper by Sydney King with 23 seconds left in overtime put UWA up 67-66. SHC suffered a turnover under the basket on the other end that led to Lady Tiger Moeiha Calmes making 1-of-2 free throws for a 68-66 UWA advantage with 8 seconds showing.
Taking the ball in at half court, the Badgers benefited from a technical foul on UWA when Ariel Wilson inadvertently slapped the ball out of the inbounding player's hands before the ball was released. Senior guard
Natalie Harper made the first free throw, but missed the second to make it 68-67 and a steal by Calmes with three seconds left decided the issue on the final Badger possession of the night.
At the end of regulation, a block by junior center
Leah Washington of a Latisha McCullum 3-point attempt from the top of the key with 8 seconds left preserved a 61-61 tie, sending the game into the extra period.
Freshman forward
Tiffany Valentine paced SHC with 15 points while Washington and Harper each added 10 points. Junior forward
Camry Johnson led all rebounders with nine boards. SHC out-rebounded the Lady Tigers 41-40, but suffered 26 turnovers versus 10 steals by UWA. As a team, the Badgers shot 39.7% (25-63) overall and were 28.6% (6-21) from 3-point land. The SHC struggle at the free throw line reared its ugly head again as the Badgers made just 47.8% (11-23) of their charity attempts.
For the visiting team, Calmes scored 17 points of which nine came at the free throw line and Wilson contributed 14 points. The Lady Ligers lost 21 turnovers to 12 Badger takeaways. UWA shot 41.4% (24-58) from the field and 33.3% (3-9) from behind the arc while converting on 65.4% (17-26) of their free throws.
The Badgers (0-2) will travel to Clinton, Miss., on Saturday to face the Mississippi College Choctaws (1-0) in a non-conference game beginning at 2 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
