Hot shooting Badgers outdistance Choctaws, 70-63
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the year with a 70-63 non-conference home decision over the Mississippi College Choctaws at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Tuesday night.

The Choctaws (1-1) jumped out to an early 16-9 lead but SHC rallied behind seven straight points by redshirt freshman Sawyer Glick to take an 18-17 lead at the 10-minute mark.

From there, the Badgers never looked back building as much as a 35-25 advantage and taking a 35-27 cushion into halftime.

The final 20 minutes of play was much like the final 10 minutes of the first half as the Badgers continued to be patient on offense by looking for the interior drive to the basket. "I am very, very proud of our players after this performance because they took the things that we as coaches talked about since the games on Friday and Saturday and they did exactly what we asked," said SHC head coach Aaron Niven after the game. "We turned down jumpers and looked to drive the ball. We also played defense with intensity and purpose. This past weekend we didn't play defense the way we need to play it."

By the 10- minute mark of the second half, SHC built out an 18-point bulge and didn't the see the lead dip under 10 points until the final 30 seconds as they Badgers decided to sacrifice aggressive defense in favor of running out the clock.

"We are such a young team that we have to expect pretty good nights like tonight, but then be ready to see nights where we're not so good," said Niven. "I'm just so proud that our players did what we asked them to do tonight."

Overall, the Badgers torched the nets at a 51.9% (27-52) pace including 66.7% (6-9) in 3-point attempts. Spring Hill also solved its early season free throw woes with a 90.9% (10-11) effort at the line. SHC turned the ball over 17 times against three Choctaws steals and benefitted from just seven MC fumbles versus three Badger steals. Under the baskets, SHC won the battle of the boards by a 34-28 margin.

Individually, Glick scored 18 points and sophomore Walter Massey added 12 points while freshman Chase Shellman handed out six of the 11 SHC assists.

MC was paced by Tory Rice with 23 points and 13 rebounds and Jonathan McGee and Tristan Moore each contributed 10 points.

The Badgers (1-2) will visit the Wolf Pack (2-2) of Loyola University (La.) at the Den in New Orleans for a non-conference game on Thursday at 7 p.m. as part the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight series. Since 2001, the Badgers hold a 20-12 advantage in the series with the Wolf Pack, including a 76-64 loss to Loyola in Mobile last season.
