Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team broke a 15-game losing streak with a 63-55 non-conference victory over the William Carey University (WCU) Lady Crusaders on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

SHC held a 34-21 lead over the Lady Crusaders (2-5) at halftime after leading by as much as 15 points with 1:18 left on the clock before intermission.

In the second half, SHC built as much as a 21-point lead with 7:11 remaining in the game and the Badgers up by a 57-36 score, but Carey would not give up easily. The visitors from Hattiesburg, Miss., turned up the defensive pressure and Spring Hill began to turn the ball over and miss their shots. By the 3:02 mark, WCU had cut it down to just a 59-53 SHC advantage with the game suddenly very much in doubt.

A crucial 3-point play off a layup and the foul by senior guard Twarner Witherspoon rebuilt a 62-53 Badger cushion with 2:19 remaining as SHC then was able to hold on for their first victory as an NCAA Division II program.

SHC junior guard Natalie Harper was red hot from the outside for the entire night draining 6-of-6 3-point attempts for a total of 20 points while Witherspoon dropped in 10 points. As a team, the Badgers were 48.1% (25-52) overall from the floor including a perfect 9-for-9 from 3-point distance. SHC suffered 24 turnovers against 17 steals by Carey's defense.

Carey was paced by Fredrikah Wilson with 14 points while the Crusaders made 34% (17-50) of their shots from the field and 33.3% (2-6) of their 3-point attempts. WCU lost the ball 25 times in the face of nine Badger steals, but out-rebounded SHC by a slim 36-34 margin.

Spring Hill's win ended a losing skid that began with a 49-46 loss at William Carey on January 23, 2014.

Spring Hill (1-3) now takes a 7-day break for final exams before traveling to the University of Montevallo (Ala.) for a non-conference game versus the Falcons (0-5) beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in Trustmark Arena.
