Cold first half dooms Badger ladies in 87-72 loss at UWF
Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team lost an 87-72 non-conference verdict at the University of West Florida (UWF) on Tuesday evening in the UWF Field House as the Lady Argos downed the Badgers for the second time in just four days.

SHC and the Lady Argos (2-0) traded points to open the game as the Badgers made lay ups by sophomore forward Camry Johnson and senior guard Elissa VandeWaa that were sandwiched around four consecutive free throws on the other end by UWF for a 4-4 deadlock. A series of Badger turnovers led to a 14-8 Lady Argo advantage at the 14 minute mark and expanded to a 28-10 bulge four minutes later. Junior guard Armanee Broussard finally broke the scoring drought for the Badgers with 2-of-3 free throws at 9:52.

By halftime, UWF held a 42-27 cushion after 20 minutes in which they shot 44.1% (15-34) and the Badgers hit just 30.4% (7-23) from the floor. The Lady Argos also beat Spring Hill under the boards with a 27-19 advantage in rebounding.

The Lady Argos maintained a comfortable 60-38 lead at 13:10 left in the contest as Badgers turnovers and strong inside play by UWF remained the story of the game. Spring Hill rallied to fill the hole down to 70-60 at 6:00 off a 3-pointer by freshman guard Raneisha Andrews, but West Florida keep the Badgers at arm's length down the home stretch for the 87-72 final score.

Overall, Spring Hill shot 43.2% (19-44) from the field and 27.3% (3-11) in 3-point attempts while being out-rebounded 46-32 and suffering 29 turnovers versus 14 steal by the home squad. VandeWaa led the Badgers with 17 points while freshman guard Jewel Hill and sophomore center Leah Washington each contributed 11 points and Andrews added 10 points.

UWF knocked down 44.1% (30-68) of their shots with a 0-2 effort from 3-point range. The Lady Argos committed 24 turnovers against eight steals by SHC. The free throw line proved crucial in the contest with West Florida making 27 of 33 attempts (.818) while SHC made just 31 of 46 freebies (.674). Forward Kelly Preston of UWF led all scorers with 23 points as the Argos put five players in double digits.

Spring Hill (0-3) next plays the University of South Alabama (USA) Lady Jags (2-1) in an exhibition game at the USA Mitchell Center on Tuesday beginning at 5:05 p.m.
